Fortunately, advances within Apple&rsquo;s OS X operating system simplify connecting <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.techrepublic.com.com\/window-on-windows\/\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#003399\">Windows XP<\/font><\/a> and Macs on the same network. Windows administrators can follow these steps to add Macs to Windows workgroups.<\/p>\n<p class=\"entry\" align=\"justify\"><em>This blog post is also available in the PDF format in a <a href=\"http:\/\/downloads.techrepublic.com.com\/abstract.aspx?docid=243866\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#003399\">TechRepublic download<\/font><\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"entry\" align=\"justify\">Verify the PC side<\/h2>\n<p class=\"entry\" align=\"justify\">After confirming the Windows and Mac systems all have Ethernet connections and required switches or wireless connectivity, begin by verifying the Windows workgroup name (<strong>Figure A<\/strong>):<\/p>\n<div class=\"entry\" align=\"justify\">\n<ol>\n<li>Click Start.<\/li>\n<li>Right-click My Computer and select Properties.<\/li>\n<li>Select the Computer Name tab.<\/li>\n<li>Note or record the name of the workgroup you wish to add the Mac to.<\/li>\n<\/ol><\/div>\n<h4 align=\"justify\">Figure A<\/h4>\n<h5 align=\"justify\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/i.t.com.com\/i\/tr\/gallery\/ee\/macwingroup\/workgroup.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"419\" height=\"486\" \/><\/h5>\n<h6 align=\"justify\">Verify the Windows workgroup name by right-clicking My Computer, selecting Properties, and clicking the Computer Name tab.<\/h6>\n<p align=\"justify\">Next, confirm the Windows workgroup is sharing the appropriate files within the workgroup:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Click Start.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Double-click My Computer.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Verify the appropriate folders are shared (look for the folder held by a blue hand icon (<strong>Figure B<\/strong>), thereby indicating the resource is being shared).<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4 align=\"justify\">Figure B<\/h4>\n<h5 align=\"justify\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/i.t.com.com\/i\/tr\/gallery\/ee\/macwingroup\/PrintersandFaxes.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"449\" height=\"460\" \/><\/h5>\n<h6 align=\"justify\">The blue hand icon notes shared resources.<\/h6>\n<p align=\"justify\">Once you&rsquo;ve confirmed the right Windows files are being shared, or if you only wish to share a printer, check to ensure a printer or printers are being shared by:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Clicking Start.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Clicking Printers and Faxes.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Confirming a printer is being shared (look for the same blue hand icon indicating the printer is a shared resource).<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p align=\"justify\">&nbsp;Before connecting the Mac units to the workgroup, you need to review the users\/groups and permissions associated with the shared resources (to ensure you can properly configure the Macs to connect to the resources). For each shared resource:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Right-click the shared resource and select Properties from the pop-up menu.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Click the Security tab (<strong>Figure C<\/strong>).<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Note the group or user names receiving access to the resource.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Note the specific permissions each group or user receives.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Make any required adjustments to group and user permissions using the supplied Add and Remove buttons.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Click OK (if you&rsquo;ve made any changes or just close the window).<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4 align=\"justify\">Figure C<\/h4>\n<h5 align=\"justify\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/i.t.com.com\/i\/tr\/gallery\/ee\/macwingroup\/SharedPrinter.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"498\" height=\"499\" \/><\/h5>\n<h6 align=\"justify\">Use the Permissions tab to configure specific permissions for users and groups.<\/h6>\n<p align=\"justify\">If you don&rsquo;t see permissions listed specifically for each user, your Windows XP system is likely set to Simple File Sharing. To turn Simply File Sharing off and enable more granular control of file and printer shares:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Click Start.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Select My Computer.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Click Tools.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Click Folder Options.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Select the View tab.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Within the Advanced settings window, scroll toward the bottom, find the Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended) check box, and ensure it&rsquo;s deselected.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Click OK.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 align=\"justify\">Mac<\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\">Now you&rsquo;re ready to move to the Mac. To connect the Mac to an existing Windows workgroup:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Click on the Dock&rsquo;s Finder icon.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Click on Network in the Finder&rsquo;s left sidebar (<strong>Figure D<\/strong>).<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Click on Workgroup.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Select the system hosting the resources you wish to connect to.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Click the Connect button.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Enter the workgroup name and a user name and password possessing permissions to access the resource within the SMB window that appears and click OK (<strong>Figure E<\/strong>).<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Select the resource you wish to connect to, then click OK (<strong>Figure F<\/strong>).<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Once the&nbsp;Windows-based resources appear in the Finder, simply drag an item from the Finder to the Mac Desktop to begin using it (<strong>Figure G<\/strong>).<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4 align=\"justify\">Figure D<\/h4>\n<h5 align=\"justify\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/i.t.com.com\/i\/tr\/gallery\/ee\/macwingroup\/Finder.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"497\" height=\"254\" \/><\/h5>\n<h6 align=\"justify\">Use Finder on the Mac to begin sharing resources.<\/h6>\n<h4 align=\"justify\">Figure E<\/h4>\n<h5 align=\"justify\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/i.t.com.com\/i\/tr\/gallery\/ee\/macwingroup\/SMB.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"420\" height=\"327\" \/><\/h5>\n<h6 align=\"justify\">You&rsquo;ll have to provide the workgroup name and a valid Windows user name and password to connect to Windows resources from the Mac.<\/h6>\n<h4 align=\"justify\">Figure F<\/h4>\n<h5 align=\"justify\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/i.t.com.com\/i\/tr\/gallery\/ee\/macwingroup\/SMB2.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"451\" height=\"167\" \/><\/h5>\n<h6 align=\"justify\">Specify the resources you wish to connect to on the Windows network.<\/h6>\n<h4 align=\"justify\">Figure G<\/h4>\n<h5 align=\"justify\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/i.t.com.com\/i\/tr\/gallery\/ee\/macwingroup\/MyDocuments.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"459\" height=\"259\" \/><\/h5>\n<h6 align=\"justify\">Windows resources will appear within Finder once the Mac completes its connection to the Windows system.<\/h6>\n<p align=\"justify\">Often, workgroup names won&rsquo;t match up perfectly. Many Windows XP systems are set to use &ldquo;MShome&rdquo; as their workgroup, while others use the standard &ldquo;Workgroup&rdquo; workgroup name. The Mac uses the default Workgroup name. However, if you wish to change the Mac&rsquo;s default workgroup name, follow these steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Click the Dock&rsquo;s Finder icon.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Click Applications.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Scroll to the Utilities folder and select it.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Double-click Directory Access (<strong>Figure H<\/strong>).<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Enable changes by clicking the padlock.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Provide an Administrator account user name and password.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Double-click SMB\/CIFS.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Enter the workgroup name you wish to use in the resulting window or select it from the provided drop-down menu.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Click Apply.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Close Directory Access.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4 align=\"justify\">Figure H<\/h4>\n<h5 align=\"justify\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/i.t.com.com\/i\/tr\/gallery\/ee\/macwingroup\/SMB3.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"461\" height=\"404\" \/><\/h5>\n<h6 align=\"justify\">Use the Mac&rsquo;s Directory Access utility to turn on Windows Sharing.<\/h6>\n<h2 align=\"justify\">Sharing resources<\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\">To share Mac-based resources with the Windows systems within a workgroup, sit at the Mac and perform these steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Click the Dock&rsquo;s System Preferences icon.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Click Sharing within the Internet &amp; Network section.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Ensure the checkbox for Windows Sharing is checked.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Click the Accounts button.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Check the boxes to specify which Mac accounts are authorized to use Windows Sharing.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Ensure Windows Sharing is on; if it&rsquo;s not, click the Start button.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p align=\"justify\">Next, move to a Windows system from which you wish to access Mac resources and do the following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Click Start.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Click My Network Places.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Click View Workgroup Computers from the Network Tasks window; the Mac system may appear.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">If the Mac system didn&rsquo;t appear within My Network Places, go to plan B; click Add a Network Place within the Task Pane.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">When the Add Network Place Wizard appears, click Next.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Highlight Choose Another Network Location and click Next.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">Within the Internet or network address box, specify the Mac system&rsquo;s IP address (which can typically be found by clicking the&nbsp;Dock&rsquo;s System Preferences icon on the Mac, selecting Network, and choosing Built-in Ethernet from the Show drop-down menu), followed by the Mac user name, then click Next.
